Younus AlGohar responds to a viewer’s question about the reality of Ishq-e-Majazi (Romantic Love) in light of spirituality.
Main points:
- Love is a topic that has always been misunderstood. Love is another word for attraction. There are many types of love; to determine which types of love are lawful and which are unlawful in the eyes of God, we have to see what the source of the attraction is. His Divine Eminence Gohar Shahi once said, ‘If somebody has money and he doesn’t love it, he is lying. If somebody has children and he doesn’t love them, he is lying. If somebody has been granted the Personal Name of God and he doesn’t love it, he is lying.’ Love of money or one’s children are not beneficial to one’s faith; however, love of the Personal Name of God is beneficial to the faith. If the Lower Self is involved in the love you have for someone, then it is Carnal Love.
- Ishq-e-Majazi (Romantic Love) does happen. There are many examples in history and culture of famous couples who had this type of love: Sassi-Pannu in Sindh, Pakistan, Sohni-Mahiwal in Punjab, Qais-Laila in the Arab world, Shirin-Farhad in Iran. Ishq-e-Majazi occurs between people whose souls lived together in the Realm of Souls; it was in the Realm of Souls that they developed love for one another. When two souls who lived together come down on Earth at the same time, they fall in love with one another all over again. These are the only circumstances where there is Ishq-e-Majazi. The relationships of these famous couples were based on intense, platonic love. There was no element of lust between them; they would spend time together as if they were brother and sister.
- In the past, some spiritual dignitaries used Ishq-e-Majazi as a tool to takes disciples towards God’s love. Waris Shah’s Spiritual Guide told him to first go and love a woman, and then he would connect him to God. So Waris Shah fell in love with a woman and after he completed this stage of Ishq-e-Majazi, his Spiritual Guide turned his love towards God. Ishq-e-Majazi is both pure and lawful, that is why it was used by saints to direct one’s love towards God. Had it been impure, it could not be used in the path towards God.
- Normally, when one falls in love with a man or a woman, they develop lustful thoughts. If you feel lust for the one you love, it is Carnal Love. Loving another human being is not bad, but it becomes an issue when it is Carnal Love. In Carnal Love, both parties exchange negative energy; the negative energy affects one’s souls and it enters the bloodstream, hurdling in the way towards God.
