Faqeeri Kya Hai?

Younus AlGohar explains how God has given Faqr (Spiritual Poverty) and Ishq (Rapturous Love) a special rank by providing anecdotes from the eras of Moses, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Ghous Pak and Bahauddin Naqshband.

Summary:
-  A woman requested Moses to ask God whether she had children in her fate. Moses asked God and found out she didn't. A few days later, a Fakir walked through her neighbourhood and announced that whoever gave him bread would have children. She hurried to give him bread and later had a child. Some years passed and Moses found the child playing near a fire in an alley; he found out that his mother was the woman who had not had children in her fate. He asked God about it and God said he would tell him later. God first instructed Moses to find someone willing to give God a piece of their meat. Moses searched high and low but nobody was willing to give it. Then Moses found the Fakir a the mountain; the Fakir cut a piece of meat from every portion of his body and gave it to Moses for God. When Moses returned with the meat to God, God said that it was the Fakir who asked God to grant the woman a child - how could God refuse him?

- When Bahauddin Naqshband miraculously got a child out who was stuck in a well, everybody around him praised him; however, there was a Fakir passing by who declared that what Bahauddin Naqshband had done was not a miracle but rather cheap antics. He said, 'Faqr (Spiritual Poverty) is when you do all sorts of [sins] and still, your Faqr is not taken away.' Bahauddin tried to find out who the man was but he could not, which suggested that the Fakir was a great spiritual personality.

- Bahauddin sent one of his concubines to the Fakir with alcohol and a plate full of biryani made from dog meat. The Fakir enjoyed all the pleasures Bahauddin sent and told the concubine, 'Tell your Spiritual Guide that these things do not affect Faqr.' Sometime later, Bahauddin and the Fakir ran into each other by the river; Bahauddin's horse urinated in the river and the Fakir objected, stating that the horse had dirtied the river. Bahauddin replied that a flowing river can never be impure. That was when the Fakir asked, 'What about the flowing river of Wehdat in my chest? Do you think it would allow your concubine, dog biryani or alcohol to affect my Faqr?'

- Shariat is like a dried up pond and Tariqat is like a flowing river. The sins of one who has the invocation of God's name in the heart are cleansed by that invocation. However, you should allow the heart to be fully enlightened rather than making it cleanse your sins.

- There was a man in Ghous Pak's era who appeared to be a dedicated worshipper, but Ghous Pak declared him to be a Zindeeq (imposter) because he used to drink alcohol in secret. But in Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)'s era, there was a man named Zaid who used to consume alcohol. When Zaid would get caught drinking, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) would first joke with him and then tell the Companions to punish him. When he was caught for the third time in this act, the Companions cursed him for constantly committing the same sin. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) told them strictly not to do that because Zaid loved Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and God. Zaid first loved Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and God and then he started to drink alcohol, due to which it was okay for him. Those who commit such sins at the beginning of their spiritual journey, however, never manage to reach the destination. They become Zindeeq.
