In response to a viewer-submitted question, Younus AlGohar explains the difference between Zohad (asceticism) and Taqwa (piety) in light of spirituality.
Summary:
- The first step which is compulsory and obligatory in the religion as an ascetic is to refrain from all the deeds, actions and words which have been declared unlawful in the religion. If they fail to do this, they will no longer have any real association with the religion in the eyes of God. The first stage of asceticism, in simple words, is obedience to God.
- In the second round of asceticism, the ascetic volunteers to refrain himself from lawful and unlawful things, both. When the ascetic reaches this stage, it becomes known as Taqwa (piety). When God's love is added to the second stage of asceticism - piety - it becomes sainthood.
- In order to practise asceticism initially, you have to consider what it is that your Lower Self is most inclined towards - and then refrain from that. It is not necessarily about wearing simple, low-quality clothes.
'You shall not please God until you sacrifice what you love the most for his sake'. - Quran 3:92
- Jesus Christ practised a profound form of asceticism and austerity in which he hid his true eminence and origin from the world. No one else among human beings can follow this extreme form of asceticism.
